How to Choose a Dog: Purebreds Need Rescue Too
Looking for a purebred dog but feeling guilty because so many dogs in rescue need homes? Good news! There are plenty of purebred dogs also waiting for loving families!

Purebred Dogs in Shelters and Rescues
While it’s true that most dogs in shelters and all-breed rescues across Canada are mixed breeds, purebred dogs do end up in shelters too. These dogs need homes just as much as any other dog.
Some of these purebreds come from difficult situations, like puppy mills or hoarding cases, and may require extra work and patience. But many others are well-loved pets who simply need a new home due to changes in their owner’s circumstances.
If you’re patient, and careful not to take on more challenges than you’re ready for, you may be able to find the purebred dog you want through a shelter or rescue. However, it’s more likely you’ll find an adult dog rather than a puppy.
Breed-Specific Rescues
Many people don’t realize that breed clubs also run rescue organizations. They are dedicated to looking after dogs of their breed, which is one reason you don’t often see purebreds in general shelters in Canada.
For example, when I got my first Sheltie as an adult, I adopted her through the breed club’s rescue. They had several dogs available. Some came from a breeder who had passed away, while others, like my dog, were surrendered by families who loved them but couldn’t provide enough time and attention.

Older Dogs from Breeders
Reputable breeders sometimes also have older puppies or adult dogs they want to place.
- Sometimes a puppy kept for breeding doesn’t develop as expected.
- Sometimes a retired female needs a loving home after her breeding career.
- Good breeders will always take their dogs back if needed, even years later.
A friend of mine had a dog come back to her when he was 7 years old. There was nothing wrong with him. His owner had died and there was no one in the family who could give him a home. She kept him until she found the right home for him.
Why Consider an Adult Dog?
It’s true that if you want a purebred rescue dog, you’re likely adopting an older puppy or an adult, not a tiny 8-week-old. But adult dogs have many advantages:
- Their personalities and physical traits are fully developed.
- Many already have basic training.
- They usually sleep through the night.
- You know exactly what you’re getting. No big surprises!
How to Find Purebred Dogs for Adoption
If you’re interested in rescuing a purebred dog, a good first step is to contact the Canadian Kennel Club. They can help you find breed clubs and their rescue programs.
Sometimes dogs are publicly listed for adoption; other times, placements happen through networking and word of mouth.
Either way, these dogs are out there and they need loving homes just like any other rescue dog. 🙂
